The morning sun began to rise. The sky was a pale blue in the east but still a deep purple in the west. Crickets chirped noisily in the thicket around the shelter as Chuck loaded the items Mick had specified onto the back of the truck.

He counted three tool belts, one for each of them. Each belt contained flashlights, screwdrivers, hammers, and wire cutters. If the prison was deserted, they would have to break in.

That’s a new idea, Chuck thought, breaking into a prison.

Mick and Jim joined Chuck after he had finished loading the truck. All three were armed to the teeth. Neither of them had less than three firearms each. Each had a rifle strapped to their backs, two pistols around their waist, and a machete for good measure. It was becoming the standard post-plague fashion.

They got into the truck without saying a word and drove off to find a better, safer refuge.

One hundred yards away, a lone zombie raised its head at the sound of the truck leaving. It moaned a song of confusion and desire.
